Al, a native of Baltimore County, Maryland, founded Rubeling & Associates, Inc. in 1981. After more than 30 years of success, Al merged the firm with Johnson, Mirmiran, Thompson, becoming JMT Architecture. He is the Architecture Practice Leader for JMT’s studios in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Cleveland.

Al’s vision is at the core of everything JMT Architecture does. His leadership is rooted in his passion for the community, belief in giving back, and service to making lives better. JMT Architecture’s mission and philosophy is Al’s mission and philosophy. In addition to leading the firm, Al is a retired faculty member at the University of Maryland College Park School of Architecture. He is the author of How to Start and Operate Your Own Design Firm and is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows, where he also served the National Association as Chancellor in 2015.

Al has held leadership positions within the Maryland State Board of Architects and the Boards of Trustees for the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland and St. James Academy. He has served on the AIA Boards for the Baltimore and Maryland Chapters as well as the National Board of Directors in Washington, DC, and as a Trustee for the National AIA Trust. He currently serves on JMT’s Board of Directors and Operations Committee. Al’s commitment to creating spaces where people thrive has resulted in master planning and design success for K-12, nonprofit, and religious clients throughout the east coast.
