11th Street Station Reconstruction
Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority
The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the nation’s fifth largest public transit agency, operating six different transportation modes and 290 stations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the surrounding four suburban counties. SEPTA’s most traveled line is the rapid transit system known as The Market-Frankford Line (MFL). The 12.9-mile line features both elevated and subway sections and 28 stations. It remains one of Philadelphia’s busiest and most used systems and runs east-west under Market Street through Center City Philadelphia. The Market-Frankford line serves over 187,000 transit passengers on an average weekday.
JMT is providing engineering and architectural design for a comprehensive reconstruction of 11th Street Station, just blocks from City Hall. Work includes a new fairline and paid area renovations, new utility and support spaces, platform structural rehabilitation, two new elevators, and new stair headhouses at street level. The design ensures best value, using repeatable elements, durable materials and focusing features where most impactful for user experience.
Supporting SEPTA’s need for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant stations on the Market- Frankford Line, the design enhances wayfinding through color and directional emphasis at station egress points. ADA compliant structures at the station will contribute to the safety and travel opportunities for all transit passengers.
